About Shelta
How Shelta came about.:
Mike advertised for a songwriter on the internet and Joe made contact. They arranged to meet and Mike gave Joe a CD he had prepared so that Joe could write some lyrics to his tunes and they would review the result in a week' . Mike loves putting together musical compositions but confesses to not being the best lyricist in the world.. He says 'It excites me every time I give Joe some music because when he finishes the song off and we either record or rehearse it, I love hearing it for the first time. Joe never fails to deliver the goods, it’s worked very well .' A few days after their first meeting Joe went round to Mikes house as he had finished the first song, Mike had an air raid shelter at the end of his garden which he used as a make shift recording studio so they decided to record what Joe had written to the demo track. Mike hadn’t seen the lyrics or heard the melody at this point, he remembers thinking this Chorus is a bit of alright, but trying to focus on capturing the vocals so he could actually create a new song.Well it went pretty well because the very first tune turned out to be Beautiful Girl, so then it was a no brainer with what they should do from then, more like 'when can we write more songs like that.'They knocked out a couple more tracks , Let’s Talk and I’ll be Alright were the next ones which then lead them onto forming the band. Dan Lawrence was brought in as he was a mate of Joes and they gigged a few songs with 2 others Jago on drums and Sean on bass. The band was formed in 2007 Jago and Sean were replaced in 2009 and the current line up with Dave on Drums and Andy on bass meant they were ready..The story behind the name I think you may have worked out already, , as they recorded the songs in the air raid shelta Mike thought that the name Shelta was appropriate.. It wasn’t intended to stay with them but it seems to have so far and is a representation of where they came from.
The band has gigged extensively in 2008/9 playing such venues as: The Water Rats, Jamm -Brixton, Tommy Flynns, 12 Bar, Rhythm Factory, Dirty South just to name a few. : www.myspace.com/gimmeshelta
placed at no. 10 on Alan McGees ones to look out for in 2010 with this comment : I predict Shelta to be the dark-horse band of 2010. Their astonishing song, “Beautiful Girl”, made me think of the sweeping, emotive ballads once offered by the Verve. It is a captivating performance and one that leaves no doubt as to the incendiary songwriting abilities of Joe Wyatt.

Shelta have a very varied song choice to offer, with something for everyone. Their songs are very different from each other but always have a common thread in the distinctive and strong lead vocals of Joe.
